St. Paul’s University (SPU) is celebrating a major triumph in student innovation after Alvin Macharia, an SPU student and innovator at the university’s Innovation and Incubation Hub (iPARK), clinched the 1st Runner-Up position at the prestigious Q-Solve Kenya Hackathon 2026.

The high-stakes event, hosted at Strathmore University in Nairobi from September 1 to 3, 2026, brought together brilliant university minds, researchers, and young technology enthusiasts from across the region to build quantum-inspired solutions for real-world challenges.

Harnessing Frontier Technology to Fight Financial Fraud

Alvin, alongside his interdisciplinary team, impressed a panel of judges, industry mentors, and quantum experts with their creation: a Quantum-Enhanced Fraud Detection Application.

Financial fraud continues to pose a massive threat to East Africa’s rapidly expanding digital economy and fintech ecosystem. Standard classical algorithms often struggle with the complexity, volume, and real-time processing needed to catch dynamic fraud patterns. Alvin’s team tackled this gap by leveraging quantum machine learning and advanced simulation algorithms to detect anomalies, analyze threat patterns, and minimize fraudulent transactions with higher accuracy and reduced processing times.

The innovation directly aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) under the hackathon's Fintech & Financial Inclusion track.
