SPU Goes Global: Highlighting Sustainable Erasmus+ Week in Romania

St. Paul’s University has once again solidified its footprint on the international stage, proving that our commitment to academic excellence and global citizenship knows no borders.

Last week, a delegation of representatives from SPU joined an elite gathering of global scholars, administrators, and students in Europe. They participated in the prestigious 4th edition of the Sustainable Erasmus+ Week Training, hosted by the University of Life Sciences “King Mihai I” (Universitatea de Științele Vieții “Regele Mihai I” din Timișoara) in the vibrant city of Timișoara, Romania.

The intensive, European Union (EU) funded program kicked off on Monday, May 18th, and successfully concluded on Friday, May 22nd, 2026.

A Melting Pot of Global Ideas

The Sustainable Erasmus+ Week Training is not just any conventional academic seminar; it is a premier international forum designed to foster deep cross-border collaboration, share cutting-edge educational practices, and champion sustainability in higher education.

This year’s edition achieved a massive milestone in scale and diversity:

  • 165+ Active Participants: Bringing together diverse perspectives on global development.

  • 50 Partner Universities: Representing institutions from virtually every corner of the globe.

  • 1 Shared Vision: Advancing internationalization and sustainable development under the umbrella of the EU-funded Erasmus+ framework.

Throughout the five-day event, attendees engaged in high-level workshops, peer-to-peer networking sessions, and collaborative panels aimed at solving modern institutional challenges through the lens of sustainability.

Spotlight on SPU Excellence: Mary Chematia

While institutional partnerships are vital, the true heartbeat of the Erasmus+ program lies in its impact on individual students. This year, SPU celebrates Mary Chematia, a passionate Community Development student who is currently a direct beneficiary of this prestigious exchange program.

Mary is currently stationed at the University of Life Sciences “King Mihai I”, immersing herself in a completely different academic and cultural ecosystem. By participating in this high-profile training week, Mary has put St. Paul’s University firmly on the global map.

"Experiencing community development concepts through an international lens is eye-opening. Mary’s presence in Romania is a proud moment for all of us, proving that SPU students are equipped to hold their own and lead conversations on the world stage."

For a discipline like Community Development, firsthand exposure to how European institutions tackle ecological balance, urban sustainability, and social equity is invaluable. Mary is not just absorbing knowledge; she is representing the spirit, resilience, and values of the SPU community in Europe.

The Strategic Importance of Erasmus+ for SPU

Internationalization is a core pillar of St. Paul's University's mission. Collaborations with historic European institutions like the University of Life Sciences “King Mihai I” provide our faculty and student body with unique opportunities to:

  1. Enhance Academic Research: Partnering on global issues like climate change, agriculture, and sustainable development.

  2. Foster Cultural Exchange: Building empathetic, well-rounded graduates who understand global dynamics.

  3. Elevate Institutional Standing: Aligning SPU’s curriculum and benchmarks with international standards of excellence.

As the curtains fell on this year's training week last Friday, the connections forged and the strategies discussed will undoubtedly pave the way for more robust exchange programs, joint research ventures, and enhanced opportunities for our students in the future.

We extend our warmest congratulations to Mary Chematia and the entire SPU delegation for flying the Kenyan and SPU flags high in Romania! We look forward to welcoming our team back and integrating these global insights into our local communities.
