Leading with Excellence: St. Paul’s University Welcomes Prof. Esther Mombo as Acting Vice-Chancellor

We are delighted to share the wonderful news of a new chapter at St. Paul’s University. Effective Thursday, 1st January 2026, Prof. Esther Mombo has officially transitioned into her new role as the Acting Vice-Chancellor.

Prof. Mombo is a distinguished scholar and a familiar face within the St. Paul’s community. Her appointment comes at a pivotal time as the university continues its journey toward becoming a premier regional center of excellence in teaching, research, innovation, and community engagement.

A Legacy of Academic Leadership

Prof. Mombo’s journey is one of profound dedication to higher education and theological discourse. Having served previously as the Academic Dean and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs) at St. Paul’s University, she brings a wealth of institutional knowledge and administrative expertise to this high office.

Her leadership experience spans across various departments, including serving as the Director of the St. Paul’s Institute of Lifelong Learning (SPILL) and Director in charge of International Partnerships and Alumni Relations.

A Global Scholar with a Heart for Gender Justice

Beyond our campus, Prof. Mombo is a recognized voice in international academia and the global church. Her impressive profile includes:

  • Global Impact: She has served as the Co-Moderator of the World Council of Churches’ (WCC) Commission on Education and Ecumenical Formation.

  • Research & Advocacy: She is the Chair of the African Contemporary Institute of Research in Africa (AICMAR) and the East African Coordinator of the Circle of Concerned African Women Theologians (CCAWT).

  • Visiting Professorships: Her expertise has been sought by world-class institutions, including the University of Edinburgh, Trinity College Dublin, Texas Christian University, and Yonsei University in South Korea.

  • Honored Excellence: Prof. Mombo is the recipient of two honorary doctorates—one from Virginia Theological Seminary (2007) and another from her alma mater, the University of Edinburgh (2023)—in recognition of her tireless work in gender justice and her extensive contributions to Africa.
