From Alumni to Minister: Hon. Samuel Ador Thon’s Inspiring Homecoming to St. Paul’s University

At St. Paul’s University (SPU), we take immense pride in seeing our graduates transform into pillars of leadership across the African continent. Today was a particularly special day as we welcomed back one of our own: Hon. Samuel Ador Thon, the Minister of General Education and Instruction for Jonglei State, South Sudan.

Returning to his alma mater for a courtesy visit, Hon. Thon’s presence was a powerful reminder of the ripple effect a value-based education can have on a nation’s future.

A Legacy of Peace and Leadership

Hon. Thon, a graduate of the Bachelor of Arts in Peace and Conflict Studies (Class of 2016), met with our Ag. Vice Chancellor, Prof. Esther Mombo, to reflect on his journey.

He spoke candidly about how the moral grounding, academic rigor, and Christian values he encountered at SPU were instrumental in his rise to public service. For Hon. Thon, his appointment as a State Minister in South Sudan is not just a personal achievement, but a product of the mentorship and quality education he received during his years on campus.

"The environment at SPU inspired my passion for peace-building and prepared me for the complexities of public service," Hon. Thon shared during the visit.

Strengthening Regional Ties

The visit wasn't just about nostalgia; it was about the future. Hon. Thon and Prof. Mombo discussed strategic partnerships aimed at transforming the education system in Jonglei State. Key areas of collaboration include:

  • Capacity Building: Specialized training for teachers and education officials.
  • Peace & Conflict Transformation: Leveraging SPU’s expertise to foster stability through education.
  • Research & Exchange: Collaborative programs for students and staff to enhance regional relations.

A Token of Gratitude

As a gesture of his enduring connection to the university, Hon. Thon presented a beautifully designed plaque to the University leadership. This token of appreciation honors the lecturers and staff who nurtured his growth nearly a decade ago.

Prof. Mombo, receiving the plaque, commended the Minister for being a "living testimony" of the university’s mission to produce leaders of integrity.

Shaping Africa’s Future

Hon. Samuel Ador Thon’s homecoming is a proud moment for the entire SPU community. It reinforces our commitment to nurturing "Servant Leaders" who go beyond borders to create meaningful change.

We applaud Hon. Thon for his dedication to his country and look forward to a fruitful partnership that will empower the people of Jonglei State and South Sudan at large.

Welcome home, Mr. Minister!
