MASTER OF SCIENCE IN INFORMATICS

Programme Overview

Introduction

The Master of Science in Informatics Programme is geared towards equipping graduates with competencies and skills in informatics. The purpose of this program is to develop graduates who will not only have technical expertise in their specific field, but also have the ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams and tackle problems that require both technical and non-technical solutions.

The MSc programme stands out among most existing informatics programmes because it concentrates on both applied research and development of core professional skills. Graduates from this programme will build careers in industrial research and computing in the developing world or entrepreneurship within start-up ventures.

Rationale

Developing countries such as Kenya are increasingly adopting business process automation to improve efficiency. This shift has resulted in increased demand for professionals with the expertise to design and implement secure, intelligent systems. Despite this, there is still a significant shortage of computer security specialists both in Kenya and globally.

The Informatics Security specialization seeks to address this gap by equipping learners with the requisite knowledge and skills to design, develop, implement, and manage secure, complex, and intelligent systems. They will also be able to critically assess threats and vulnerabilities while integrating appropriate security strategies in computing systems and the Internet of Things (IoT).

In parallel, the exponential growth of heterogeneous data across all sectors has amplified the need for professionals capable of collecting, processing, and deriving meaningful insights from these vast resources. The Artificial Intelligence and Data Science specialization is designed to meet this need by providing trainees with advanced skills in machine learning, data analytics, high-performance computing, data mining, and information retrieval essential for solving real-world problems across diverse industries.
