From Our Classrooms to the Global Stage: SPU’s Hillary Nyakundi Named one of MLH’s Top 50 Global Technologists!

We are incredibly proud to announce that one of our own, Hillary Nyakundi, a Computer Science student here at St. Paul's University-Kenya, has been named to the prestigious Major League Hacking (MLH) Top 50 list for 2025!

This global recognition honors the most inspiring and impactful young developers and leaders in technology and STEM education worldwide. Hillary’s achievement places him among the world's elite change-makers, representing not only SPU but all of Kenya on this global stage.

A Mission Rooted in Community

Hillary’s story isn't just about exceptional coding skills; it's about a deep-seated commitment to community that reflects the very heart of SPU’s values. His journey in tech began with curiosity, but it quickly transformed into a mission: to help others learn, grow, and find their own place in the industry.

"My love of technology grew from a passion to give back to the community," Hillary shares. "Each time someone tells me that my guide helped them solve a problem, I take that as impact created."

This passion for giving back is evident in his leadership. As the Community Lead for Write the Docs (WTD) Kenya, Hillary has dedicated himself to demystifying technology. His insightful blogs, tutorials, and how-to guides have helped countless developers overcome complex challenges. This dedication to sharing knowledge earned him the Open Source Writer of the Year Award in 2022, a clear reflection of his generosity and skill.

Building Bridges, Opening Doors

Hillary doesn’t just write—he actively builds the tech ecosystem. By organizing bootcamps, events, and "Ask Me Anything" (AMA) sessions, he bridges the critical gap between academic learning and real-world practice. He connects aspiring developers with industry experts, opening doors to mentorship, networking, and global opportunities for many young Kenyans.

"I am a product of the community," he explains. "Giving back is what makes me stand out. It has opened many doors and allowed me to meet and interact with leading experts in the industry."

A Reflection of the SPU Spirit

Hillary’s journey is a powerful testament to the St. Paul’s University spirit. We are committed to nurturing talent that is not only globally competitive but also grounded in service and integrity. He exemplifies the SPU ethos: preparing students who serve with excellence, ethics, and innovation across the world. His success is not measured in titles alone, but in the transformation he inspires—how many lives are touched, problems are solved, and doors are opened for others. According to Mike Swift, CEO and Co-Founder of Major League Hacking, the MLH Top 50 celebrates "the most innovative and impactful members of the next generation of technologists." Hillary’s inclusion confirms that SPU students and Kenyan youth are not just participating in global innovation—they are leading it. Hillary’s story reminds us all that a great journey begins with curiosity and is amplified by community. His achievement reinforces the growing reputation of St. Paul’s University as a home for visionary thinkers who dare to dream beyond boundaries.

Please join us in congratulating Hillary Nyakundi on this outstanding global achievement!
