SPU Leads the Charge in Regional Digital Transformation: The FOSTER Project Forum

St. Paul’s University (SPU) is taking a bold step forward in the evolution of African research and academia. This week, SPU reaffirmed its commitment to the future of "Open Science" through its active leadership in the FOSTER Project, an ambitious initiative co-founded by the European Union (Ref No. 101178078).

A Meeting of Minds in Dar es Salaam

On April 23-24, a high-level forum themed "Fostering Digital Transformation of Science in Kenya and Tanzania" took place at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Leading the SPU charge was Prof. Abraham K. Waithima, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs. He headed an 11-member delegation of scholars and innovators, joining forces with key regional partners to bridge the digital gap in scientific research.

What is the FOSTER Project?

The FOSTER Project isn't just about technology; it’s about access. It aims to dismantle the barriers to scientific knowledge, making research more transparent, collaborative, and impactful for society.

SPU is proud to collaborate with a distinguished network of partner institutions:

  • Daystar University (Kenya)

  • Garissa University (Kenya)

  • University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania)

  • Eastern and Southern African Management Institute (ESAMI)

Why Digital Transformation Matters

For SPU, participating in this forum is a strategic move toward three core pillars:

  1. Open Access to Science: Ensuring that groundbreaking research isn't locked behind paywalls, but is available to solve real-world problems.

  2. Societal Impact: Using data and digital tools to address the specific challenges facing communities in East Africa.

  3. Innovation: Equipping our faculty and students with the digital infrastructure needed to compete on a global scientific stage.

"By fostering digital transformation, we aren't just changing how we do research; we are changing who that research serves."

Looking Ahead

As the forum concludes, the work is just beginning. St. Paul’s University continues to integrate these digital strategies into our academic framework, ensuring that our students and researchers are at the forefront of the global Open Science movement.
