Conference on Strengthening Research and Innovations for Climate Adaptation and Sustainable Development

Theme: Strengthening Research and Innovations for Climate Adaptation and Sustainable Development

Introduction

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges to development. Sustainable development goal number 13 provides opportunities for developed and developing nations to work together to find and implement solutions that enhance climate mitigation and adaptation. This goal resonates with the objective of the Paris Agreement, namely, “to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change, in the context of sustainable development and efforts to eradicate poverty”. This includes holding the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2 °C and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels; and increasing the ability to adapt to the adverse impacts of climate change and foster climate resilience and low greenhouse gas emissions development, in a manner that does not threaten food production.

Achieving most of the Sustainable Development Goals will be a great challenge for majority of the countries in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This is because the effects of extreme climate events, especially droughts, are projected to worsen in the coming decades at the SSA region. This conference brings together scholars, policy makers and practitioners to share advances in research and innovations aimed at strengthening Africa’s adaptive capacity.
